How to Start Learning Italian

Looking to learn Italian but don’t know where to start? Do you need a roadmap to get you started? Or perhaps you are frustrated in your attempts and feel like you are getting nowhere. It could be that you are not going about it correctly. Many people need to learn the correct methods or the proper approach in order to properly learn. In fact, most people require a combination of methods to get them over the hump.

Let’s take the analogy of changing a flat tire. If you don’t have a jack, then you probably won’t get far. It does not matter how strong or intelligent you are. It does not matter how much money you have. The same holds true for language learning as well. Without the proper tools and techniques, you will not get very far.

How many ways can you learn Italian?

There are probably over 100 methods that you can use to learn a language. But I’ve listed 37 of them – the ones that I think are the most effective, easiest and quickest ways to learn. We all learn differently some of us are visual learners - some of us are auditory learners.

I’ve been teaching Italian periodically for over 10 years and these are the methods and ways that I recommend to my students and to anyone else that wants to learn the Italian language. And these are the ways that have helped me reinforce and strengthen my own knowledge.

Do I have to spend a lot of money to learn a new language?

This is a question I get asked often. You don’t need to spend a fortune to learn Italian. There are 37 ways in the book and many of them can be done for free or very little cost.

The book is divided into three sections

  • Free Ways to Learn Italian

  • Relatively Inexpensive Ways to Learn Italian

  • Ways to Learn Italian by Spending Money

This book will not teach you Italian per se. Instead, it will teach you the benefits, methods, approach and mindset. And these are not exclusive to Italian – they could be used for any other language as well such as Spanish, French, German, etc.

Utilizing the proper methods, tools and techniques might be the proper push that you would need to propel you forward in your language learning. And you could be speaking Italian fluently and soon impress your family and friends!

Very thorough. Larry has done a lot of research and we are lucky enough to have the benefits of his efforts at our finger tips for a nominal price. One of the areas of this book that I particularly like is the multitude of wonderful suggestions on how to utilize the internet regarding free opportunities to learn Italian. I also feel that his suggestions on how to practice are terrific. I am at a level where I understand a lot of grammatical rules and know a fair amount of vocabulary. I do not have anyone to actually practice speaking with. By utilizing Larry's suggestions from this book, I am optimistic about having a great starting point for actually utilizing what I have learned so far so that I may achieve my goal of being able to be fluent in Italian.
There is one thing in particualr that Larry points out in this book that I feel is so true. It is possible to go to some major cities in Italy without knowing any Italian. I agree with Larry in that it is SO MUCH MORE rewarding to be able to talk to the wonderful Italian people in THEIR language and thus have a better understanding of the subtle nuances of the Italian culture that make it so much richer than any sterile strictly sight-seeing trip/tour could ever hope to be.
Thanks Larry for the hard work that you put into this presentation so that folks like myself can learn Italian and thus experience such a beautiful culture more deeply!

a mistake
This small book (pamphlet) is nothing more than 37 ways to find out where to get information about learning the Italian language. Some examples are go to Italy, take a course, go online or read an Italian language book. I am not kidding! I think the author just wanted to say that he once wrote a book so he could have something to include in his obituary some day. You will not learn one word of Italian from this book. Any information contained in this book can be found on the internet by simple typing "Italian" and for the most part is simple common sense. Save your money, Do not by this "book".
I assumed this book was going to teach me Italian in a new way so I was a bit surprised by the actual content.
However, the content is great. Full of resources, ideas and encouragement. It's like having a mentor.
I recommend it.
So many free ways to learn a new language. I've learned more Italian in two weeks than I learned in 20 years.
There are some interesting ideas and helpful suggestions including websites, etc. Out of the 37 Ways, maybe 25% might be really doable, at least for me. Worth a read to see if it can help you.
Larry gives great ideas on how to learn Italian I have been taking classes off and on for several years, still not proficient.
This book gives more ways to improve or submerge yourself in the culture and the language. Some of the ideas I had thought of, but he elaborated, others were new and innovative.
He also gave links to other lessons and sites.
I know Larry Aiello and he was a recent guest at my ladies Italian meeting, with a very interesting and stimulating presentation about travels in Italy. He had his book 37 Ways to Learn the Italian Language at that time. Even though I grew up much like Larry, being bi-lingual from the very beginning, my interest in his book was stirred. I ordered it and read it with avid interest, being amazed at how thorough he is with his precise information on the many ways (yes, 37) in which you can learn to speak and enjoy the Italian language. Anyone who is interested in making the move to learn this beautiful, romantic language should get this book - it will help to determine which method would be best for them. Even though I read, write and speak Italian, I never stop learning and using the language with friends, family and in unexpected encounters with native-born Italians.......this always forms an instant connection and bond. I will continue to used this book to further my knowledge of Italian.
