Jane Elliott has found peace. By all accounts, she's a success story a survivor of childhood abuse who has dedicated her life to teaching. She's also engaged to marry Ben, an ambitious documentary filmmaker.
But hers is a false and fragile peace. Focusing on her students at an urban Jersey Shore school and maintaining a relationship with an absentee fiancé conveniently keep Jane from feeling much of anything at all.
This safe existence is threatened when she meets David, a musician who runs an afterschool program for at-risk kids. Because of her commitment to Ben, Jane can deny her attraction to David and convince herself they are just good friends.
But an accident, a death, a grim family obligation and her own intense desire force Jane to overcome the past, rethink the present—and take a genuine risk on love.
I'll Become The Sea The Recovery Trilogy edition by Rebecca Rogers Maher Contemporary Romance eBooks
My Short and Tweet...Loosely connected to Fault Lines, I'll Become the Sea was a powerful debut from Rebecca Rogers-Maher. True to what I've come to expect and love, this is Jane's story, a story of long-held pain, personal revelations, and healing. Oh, and love. David was a remarkable partner for Jane, and helped her realize she was worthy of love, a full life. I really enjoyed this, and am happy that I finally gave it a try.

"...I'm a...I'm a..."
"What?"
I stand up and walk down the steps. "I don't know. A...bottomless pit. A sinkhole. Quicksand."
"Jane."
"You won't be able to handle it. You won't want to."
He sits on the steps, his eyes level with mine. "You've been the center of my life for four months now. Do I look like I'm struggling?"
I start to cry. "But you will. Everyone does. Everyone."
"You had the wrong people in your life."
I shake my head.
"You think there's something unmanageable about you, and there isn't." He rises and comes down the steps. His voice is thick, but he is quiet, calm. "You think I'm going to get overwhelmed and leave you, but I won't."

I'll Become The Sea The Recovery Trilogy edition by Rebecca Rogers Maher Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
I'm not typically a fan of romance novels, but "I'll Become the Sea" really surprised me. Rebecca Rogers Maher gets all the elements just right - it's a page-turner with exactly the right amount of drama and suspense to keep you up later than usual on a work night. And the main character is well rounded and relatable, someone you might actually meet and like. I found myself wanting to know more about her beyond what I found in this book. I know the Jersey Shore well, and the author got its weird mixture of empty loneliness during off-season and sticky speediness during the summer perfectly. Nice to see something so grounded in a genre that can get a little silly. Hope to see more from this author soon!
A very thought and feeling provoking read...
Poor Jane has to deal with so much emotional baggage and feels damaged beyond anyone's capability of fixing.
She's involved with more dead-end & toxic relationships than she should be, but doesn't quite see that. Her only redeeming and real relationship at the beginning of the story is Sarah. Sarah, who has been with her through thick and thin since childhood, is Jane's pillar of strength and reason. She's not afraid remove Jane's blindfold and tries to get her friend to see the world for what it really is vs. the slide show that Jane, along with her parents and her fiance, has her convinced is her reality.
Jane's heart overflows with a desire to be "good" and to help people. I can completely relate to the standard of honor, responsibility, and loyalty that she holds herself to - thinking that she needs to be needed by everyone & needs to be perfect - otherwise she's of null value to everyone and everything around her.
Through fate, Jane meets David. She and David begin a professional relationship that turns into a true friendship and, finally, into something more. With David, she finds that she has the power to shift the false beliefs that have always been pushed upon her by her parents and her conscience. She learns to accept herself, to forgive any false/misplaced guilt for things she had no control over, and to also realize that she, too, deserves happiness and love.
